What to do in...Newcastle

Sink your teeth

You might not have associated Geordies with the budding foodie scene that's emerged in Newcastle over the last few years. For the best burger in town (and I don't mean your regular burger, these ones are piled high with quality, locally-sourced ingredients and the patties are freshly made on a daily basis), head to Fat Hippo. They have two places in Newcastle - a little joint in Jesmond and the cool Underground restaurant right next to the Theatre Royal. Definitely look them up if you're in the mood for the good kind of gluttony - their PB&J or signature Fat Hippo burger are not to be missed!

Enjoy a brew or two

Newcastle might be famed for its wild drinking scene but the last few years have seen the opening of more and more civilised establishments. We're still known as the party city, popular with students, stag do's and hen do's alike. But it's the high end watering holes that are making a name for themselves in the new Newcastle and with a growing coffee culture there's plenty of great places to grab a coffee and watch the world go by.

My favourite coffee (and sometimes cocktails) spot has to be Vicolo. Joined to the iconic Tyneside cinema, Vicolo isn't your usual kind of coffee spot. With marble tables, art and arguably one of the city's finest cups of joe, it's an Instagrammer's dream. They also offer a great selection of cocktails, desserts (try the homemade Mr Whippy style ice cream with salted caramel popcorn), cakes and sandwiches.

Get outside

While the city itself is a beautiful place to wander around, the coast and the heart of the countryside aren’t far away. Just a short Metro ride from Newcastle; Tynemouth is a beautiful little seaside town that's beckoning to be explored. With its famed fleamarket every weekend, great bars, cafes and restaurants, surfing schools and aquarium, it's the perfect place to idle away a few hours.

If it's more green space you're after, then the numerous parks around the city mean you don't even really need to head out to enjoy a little peace and quiet. If you're feeling like you need more of a moderate challenge, head a little way out towards Hexham and pick up the trail of Hadrian's Wall.

Catch a show

From shopping to art galleries, there's plenty to keep you occupied in Newcastle. For a bit of culture, head to the beautiful Theatre Royal. Perched on the well-known, picturesque Grey Street, it not only plays host to a wide selection of shows, ballets and operas, but it's also an amazing piece of architecture in its own right.
