The Best Sunday Dinners in Newcastle

Let’s be honest here, the humble Sunday roast might just be the UK’s greatest culinary achievement. It brings together all the things that speak to us most; a proper cut of local meat, a fluffy Yorkshire pud and real gravy – amongst others.

But, if you’re looking for the ultimate in roast dinner delight, the perfect Sunday should be spent in Newcastle. Here, your typical medley is nothing short of an experience. So, whether you’re looking to end the weekend with a classic or sample something a little bit fancy, here are a few of the best places to be in the Toon for that all important roast.   

The Broad Chare
25 Broad Chare, NE1 3DQ

Just a ten-minute walk from Leonardo Hotel Newcastle Quayside, over the curving Millenium Bridge that spans the River Tyne, The Broad Chare is an excellent recommendation. The atmosphere is warm without being stuffy, the food is prepared with a flourish but doesn’t oblige you to dress up for it and the flavours are simple but beautifully done.

While the Sunday Roast is naturally the feature, the Lancashire Cheese, Onion and Thyme pie is also an eye-catcher and given that there’s a dedicated section to things ‘On Toast’, you could definitely spend the best part of your day working through the list of guest ales on offer.

The Bridge Tavern
7 Akenside Hill, NE1 3UF

If you are willing to walk just 4 minutes further along from The Broad Chare, The Bridge Tavern is definitely going to tickle your taste buds. Here the Sunday Roast is a true celebration, with 3 different meat options including Topside of Wallington Estate Beef, Shoulder of Gloucester Old Spot Pork and Slow Roast Leg of Ingram Valley Lamb. There’s also a veggie option which is a delicious sounding Wild Mushroom and Keen’s Cheddar Cobbler.

Their menu changes quite frequently but they always offer the very best of British comfort foods. Plus, they have a micro-brewery downstairs where each batch provides only 360 pints. So, if you want a slightly different experience every time you go and creativity to boot, the Bridge Tavern should be firmly on your radar.

Babucho
Lower Dean Street, NE1 3JD

Exactly halfway between Leonardo Hotel Newcastle Quayside and Leonardo Hotel Newcastle, Babucho sits at the meeting point between Newcastle’s shopping district and the picturesque waterfront. In fact, this eatery is all about meeting points with its fusion food and the brasserie style bar taking you right through the day and into the night through comfy sofas to mood-lit booths.

The Sunday menu is definitely a sight to behold if you are big on your meat and offers slow roast beef, pork or chicken as well as their 28-day grand reserve sirloin of beef or slow roast leg of lamb. Vegetarians don’t really get a look here but given that this restaurant does a phenomenal roast vegetable calzone, there probably won’t be too many complaints!

The Forth Hotel
Pink Lane, NE1 5AJ
If you are looking for somewhere to spend an entire afternoon with friends or family, you should definitely give the Forth Hotel a go. This alternative pub offers a couple of different roasts including sirloin of beef and a half shropshire roast chicken. Veggies are also welcomed with a nut roast complete with vegetarian gravy and there are a couple interesting vegan options too.

Once again, this is a great place to enjoy some craft beers with your meal both on draught and in bottles. Add in a newspaper for solo eaters or a board game or two to play with family and friends and this eatery really does cater for everyone.

Blackfriars Restaurant
Friars St, NE1 4XN

This restaurant is probably best known for its medieval dining experience, whereby  groups are welcomed to dine in their traditional banquet hall, but it’s the Sunday Roast selection that really caught our eye. The menu gets off to a fantastic start with a section of Restoratives including the classic Bloody Mary keeping company with the likes of Negronis and other pick-me-ups.

Roast Waterford farm rump of beef, Roast Northumberland lamb leg and Roast Crane Row pork belly join pan roasted chicken on the selection of mains, all the while vegetarians can give vegetable haggis a go. All are served with the essential Yorkshire pud, trimmings and gravy.
