If you’re a theatre lover, then Sheffield is a city you should be adding to your ‘must visit’ list. Sheffield is the largest theatre complex outside of London comprising three theatres. The Grade II listed Lyceum Theatre is a fabulously ornate venue that puts the glamour into show time. Catch a West End production, opera and dance as well as local shows.

Still thriving on great talent - Sir Ian McKellen starred in the opening night - you’ll want to get a seat at the world-famous Crucible Theatre. Its ‘thrust stage’ design creates a very special and intimate experience.

For open workshops, as well as touring and in-house productions, head to the 400 seater Crucible Studio Theatre.

The arts scene is buzzing too. Head to the Sheffield’s landmark Millennium Gallery - home to the permanent exhibitions in the Ruskin, Metalwork and Craft & Design galleries. Catch contemporary artist Bridget Riley at the Graves Gallery or one of the excellent special exhibitions it holds.

History Lovers

For the budding historian, the family-friendly Weston Park explores the city’s history. In fact, Sheffield is a real family-friendly city with lots of great attractions from the UK’s first science adventure centre to tropical butterfly houses. And if the garden is your thing, don’t miss the 19 acres of the Sheffield Botanical Gardens. Or make your way to one of Sheffield’s most iconic buildings, the Winter Garden. It’s the largest urban glass house in Europe and houses over 2000 species of plants from all around the world.

If you’re looking for some funky fashion, then head to Ecclesall Road for boho boutiques and fashion labels. Just west of the centre, the Devonshire Quarter is great for independent shops specialising in music, style and design. Grab a bite to eat and enjoy some café-culture too.

You’ll find plenty more to tantalise your tastebuds in Sheffield. From British Curry Award winning restaurants to modern Yorkshire cuisine, local brews and regionally sourced produce, there are lots of tasty choices for eating and drinking.

After dark, Sheffield comes alive. Sheffield has a fine musical heritage - from Def Leppard to the Artic Monkeys, from ABC to Pulp. Music pumps out of a plethora of gigs and clubs - it’s a great opportunity to indulge in your favourite genre or try out something new. The Leadmill has been a popular hotspot since it opened in 1980. With everything from megaclubs to boutique dance spaces, there’s something for every musical taste.
