Our quest to find the UK’s sharpest minds continues on May 7th in Birmingham, where we’ll be staging the next leg of our pub quiz 'The Verdict'. Our host is no stranger to trivia and well-known on the quiz circuit. Just so you know what you’re up against on the night, here’s everything you need to know about ‘chaser’ Mark Labbett, aka ‘The Beast’.

  • He first began quizzing when working at Butlins holiday camp, supplementing his income with winnings from quiz machines.
  • His pub quiz team won a weekend in Paris in April 2001 after competing in the national competition, Jumbo Quiz.
  • In 2006 he won £32,000 on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and in 2009 his team The Rugby Boys won the second series of BBC4's "Only Connect".
  • He has an MA in Mathematics from Oxford University, a PGCE in secondary education from Exeter University and a CPE & LPC (Qualifications in Law) from University of Glamorgan.
  • He has had a wide range of occupations including 15 years as a secondary teacher.
  • He appeared on Mastermind in 1999, where his specialist subject was the Olympic Games.
  • He is one of the "Chasers" in the ITV quiz show The Chase, first broadcast in 2009 and hosted by Bradley Walsh.
  • His nickname "The Beast", references both his stature and his surname (Labbett sounds like the French la bête meaning "the beast"). He is 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 26 stone.
  • Since August 2013, he has appeared as the only Chaser on the U.S. version of The Chase airing on the Game Show Network hosted by Brooke Burns.
  • In 2012, he was ranked 81st in the World Quizzing Championships.
