While all eyes are drawn toward London this summer for the myriad of sporting events taking place, other U.K. cities are open for business as usual! If you’re looking for a weekend or midweek break to explore somewhere new, there are plenty of other U.K. cities which have more than enough attractions to keep you entertained.
The music has never stopped in the Beatles’ hometown of Liverpool, and if music is your thing, you’ll find rock at the Mathew Street Festival, classical from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and plenty in between. The city will also be celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four. Those in search of quieter pleasures can visit the Tate Liverpool for the only U.K. exhibition of the work of Turner, Monet and Twombly.
The beaches and vibrant night life of Brighton beckon, while its Lanes bustle with unique shops and fabulous places to eat. A number of festivals keep things lively, including the largest free beach festival in Europe, Paddle Round the Pier. Enjoy a varied program of plays and other performances throughout the summer at the Brighton Theatre Royal.
As Scotland’s largest city, Glasgow has an enormous amount to offer summer visitors, including a busy theatre district, the eclectic West End neighbourhood and an exciting music scene. Festivals include the Wickerman for music and the colourful celebration of street and circus arts, Conflux.
Edinburgh is home to six major summer festivals, making this the perfect time to visit the city. Both the Edinburgh International Festival and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe are enormous celebrations of art and culture. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Edinburgh Art Festival and the Edinburgh Mela round out the summer schedule.
Visit Scotland’s seaside resort of Aberdeen for a walk along the promenade and a visit to the funfair. The Aberdeen Summer Festival includes highland games, country fairs and more. Included in its program is the Aberdeen International Youth Festival, which is the largest arts festival for youth in the world.
