While many may know this south coast port city for its links to the doomed Titanic, Southampton is also home to many other exciting and truly fascinating attractions. Whether you’re interested in maritime history or you love to indulge in some retail therapy, here are six ideas for things to do in Southampton.
History buffs will love visiting this Southampton attraction which was built by a wealthy merchant in the late 1400s. Located on pretty St. Michael’s Square, the Tudor House and Gardens museum tracks over 900 years of the city’s history, with vivid displays on the Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian eras as well as a reconstruction of a traditional Tudor kitchen.
In addition to gorgeous interiors, the museum is blessed with ornate gardens which are the ideal place for a leisurely stroll.
No visit to Southampton is complete without taking in some of its Titanic attractions. The ship famously set sail from the port on 10th April 1912 on its maiden voyage which ended in disaster just five days later.
This walking route through the city is a real highlight as its takes in many memorials and sites around the city associated with the ill-fated ocean liner. Major points along the Titanic Trail include the Titanic Engineer’s Memorial and the Canute Chambers where the offices of the White Star Line (the company which owned the Titanic) used to be based.
Fan of all things aeronautical? You’ll be in the right place at the Solent Sky. As well as its association with ocean travel, Southampton and the surrounding area also has a rich aviation heritage – including being the birthplace of the iconic Spitfire.
The Solent Sky on Albert Road South is the best place to go to learn more about this side of the city’s history and admire models of famous aircrafts.
Formerly the Princess Alexandra Dock, this area of the city has been modernised in recent years and is now a prime spot in Southampton for dining and shopping. You’ll find the marina just south of the city centre and only a few minutes’ walk from the Solent Sky.
Take your pick of Ocean Village’s trendy eateries, browse its cool boutiques, catch a film at the Harbour Lights Picturehouse or stroll along the water for views out towards the Solent.
Another historic Southampton attraction is the Old City Walls. Dating back to the Medieval period, they’re known for being one of the longest unbroken stretches of walls in the UK. Begin your walk along them at Bargate and look out for sites like Mayflower Memorial Park, St. Michael’s Church and God’s House Tower.
Another attraction which traces Southampton’s long maritime history is the SeaCity Museum. Housed inside the city’s 1930s Civic Centre, the museum provides insight into the many ocean voyages that have begun or ended in the port over the past few thousand years.
Next door is also where you’ll find the Southampton City Art Gallery that’s home to over 3,000 works by UK and international artists.
