Mother’s Day this year falls on Sunday 6th March and it offers the perfect excuse to treat your wife, mother or grandmother to a special day filled with activity. It’s a chance to show her just how much she means to you and your family, whether indulging her in a spa treatment, spending afternoon tea together, or learning a new skill. Every mother deserves a little sophistication and spoiling, and afternoon tea at an elegant or vintage café is the ideal treat.

There are a variety of options with lots of restaurants, cafes and tea rooms across the UK offer traditional afternoon teas at varying prices. Booking is almost always essential at many tea rooms, especially around mother’s day, and some places may have a dress code.

Almost synonymous with afternoon tea is Fortnum and Mason in London, who have sold tea for over 300 years. The higher end of afternoon teas, it costs £44 per person (£48 for Single Estate tea) but the elegant Diamond Jubilee Tea Salon makes it worthwhile.

The Tower Restaurant in Edinburgh, perched above the Museum of Scotland, offers amazing views and a delightful afternoon tea menu for £18.95 per person and £25.95 with a glass of Billecart-Salmon Brut Reserve NV Champagne.

The renowned Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms in York has an award winning Craft Bakery, freshly baking and creating their tea treats, and the extensive menu is guaranteed to satisfy your every craving. Bettys is a mid-priced option at £32.95 per person and £39.95 with a glass of champagne.

What better way to spend some valuable time together than taking a class? Depending on your own hobbies and tastes, there are a plethora of different programmes out there you can enjoy.

Whether your mum is the very best or the absolute worst chef, taking a cooking class together can be a really fun experience! Together you can learn new techniques, recipes, and tips to try at home, and the dedicated time together is ideal for bonding and catching up.

Cooking classes are available throughout the UK at different prices, often depending on location, cooking level and type of cuisine – you can visit Looking to Cook to find cooking classes and schools local to you.

The Chocolate and Pastry School in Peebles, Scotland, is perfect those with a sweet tooth as you can learn how to make a variety of chocolate treats, from truffles to Easter eggs.

If cooking isn’t your thing, perhaps an arts and crafts experience is the perfect way to pass an afternoon! Many cities have places to try a workshop, from knitting to plate painting, or you can opt for an art class, London Art Classes offer a range of lessons for you both try your hand at the basics.

Make the most of a sunny weekend and take a trip to a picturesque destination you know your mum will love. Be it to city or to a natural park, it’s a great opportunity for you to dedicate some quality time together.

Oxford and Bath (pictured) are both wonderful cities that have a wealth of history and culture to discover, as well as amazing central shopping areas to peruse. If purely on a mission to shop until you both drop, why not visit Chester or Bicester Village - both cities are well-known retail therapy hotspots offering everything from high-street name brands to small, specialist shops.

Adventuring through areas of natural beauty and national parks such as The Cotswolds AONB or the Peak District National Park can also make for amazing days out with the family. The landscapes and terrains are ideal for long walks or hikes and many have breath-taking views to enjoy.
