Live Music and Art Exhibitions in Liverpool for 2014

Liverpool was European Capital of Culture in 2008 and has long been a hub of culture and artistic expression. The city gave rise to the famous Merseybeat music scene in the 1960s and, of course, The Beatles. There are many world-class galleries, festivals of art, and museums including but not limited to: the Tate Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery, International Slavery Museum, the Merseyside Maritime Museum, and the World Museum.

The World Museum has some great hands-on activities, especially popular with youngsters, and the Maritime Museum has a major exhibition called "Titanic and Liverpool: the untold story" happening throughout 2014.

David Hockney: Early Reflections

11th October 2013 – 16th March 2014

A unique selection of paintings and drawings recording the early development of David Hockney’s work and celebrating his career as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century is on-show at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool until 16th March 2014.

With pieces of his work on loan from many different establishments, this is a unique opportunity to see so much of Hockney’s work under one roof.

There are a number of themes in the exhibition, including In the Mood for Love, which looks at work produced by Hockney while he was at the Royal College of Art in the late 50’s and early 60’s.

For those seeking a taste of the vibrant music scene in Liverpool and the history behind it, Beatleweek and the Liverpool International Music Festival both start mid-august in 2014.

Beatleweek 2014

22nd August – 25th August 2014

Beatleweek is organised by the infamous Cavern Club, where the Beatles were said to have played 292 times.

The Cavern Club Beatles tribute band were flown out to New York City this month, exactly 50 years after the Beatles played there, to perform a tour organised to mark the 50th anniversary of The Beatle’s first visit to the USA. Beatleweek isn’t just about The Beatles though. There are lots of other bands who attend, from over 20 different countries. Fans come from over 40 different countries, making Beatleweek an international event!

Liverpool International Music Festival

18th August – 22nd September 2014

The LIMFestival has been designed to celebrating greatness, discovering the new and inspiring the next according to the festival’s music curator Yaw Owusu.

The festival takes place in two locations; Sefton Park, and Pier Head, which can both be reached through bus, train or ferry. There’s even a special shuttle service running from the city centre, with buses every 10 minutes.

With over 250 live performances across 35 days, there is sure to be something for everyone, make sure to check the line-up to avoid missing out!
