Leeds has long been a mecca for music of all kinds of brilliant. The constant streams of students and dedicated locals have demanded nothing but the highest quality club nights over the last twenty years. And they’ve got them. House music is booming, venues like The Mint Club, Warehouse and Canal Mills put on regular sell-out nights with the world’s top DJs full of sweaty students. But today we present an alternative night-out and one hell of a reason to make the journey up to this fine northern city; the Leeds live music scene.

Brudenell Social Club

Welcome to the Brudenell Social Club in the Hyde Park area of Leeds:

Originally a gentlemen’s social club founded by the Masons in 1913, which held cabaret and bingo nights (doesn’t sound very rock’n’roll we know, but bear with us), it looks like just another slightly run down drinking-hole in the back end of nowhere. But no! What we have here is, as described by Nathan Clark who runs the Brudenell, “a melting pot of culture that works together”. What most people who visit the Brudenell will agree on is the unpretentious setting and mix of people. I mean, look at the outside; it isn’t exactly the most exclusive-looking venue.

Artists such as the F*ck Buttons, Franz Ferdinand, The Kooks, Kate Nash and the Kaiser Chiefs have all played gigs there, which is an impressive roster, considering its size. However, the Brudenell Social Club’s bread and butter are less well known, up-and-coming artists. Expect most nights to have something on worth checking out. Some gigs worth checking out in March and April are The Orb (the guys who basically invented the ambient house genre) and Jonny Marr (guitarist from the Smiths).

Many people go to Leeds especially for the live music scene, or as a fun bolt-on to a different trip. Either way - make the most of these venues as they are true northern gems.

And don’t forget for a convenient and comfortable night’s rest, after jigging your best moves to all the Leeds live music scene has to offer, book your room at Leonardo Hotel Leeds.
