Attracting thousands of people each year, it’s easy to see why Christmas in Leeds is so magical. With all of the bright lights shining, the buzz in the air, the huge Christmas decorations displayed around town and of course, the Leeds German Christkindelmarkt – it’s simply unmissable.
The Christkindelmarkt is a German Christmas market found at the heart of Leeds, over in Millennium Square, and features more than 40 wooden stalls which all have a traditional feel to them. You’ll find plenty of quirky one-off gifts stalls, which provide an array of seasonal gifts to choose from, including festive decorations, beautiful hand-drawn Christmas cards and handcrafted toys.
Other stalls offer up plenty of traditional German delicacies such as their soups, goulash, stollen, candied fruit, gingerbread, gluhwein, and my personal favourite – bratwurst sausages! There are also dedicated stalls where you can kick back and enjoy a mulled wine (or two) wrapped up inside; it’s the perfect way to unwind after a busy day in the city's hustle and bustle, whilst still soaking in the festivities and atmosphere.
In 2017, due to popular demand, they have expanded the Christkindelmarkt and have now added a show-stopping Ferris Wheel at the front of the Leeds Art Gallery. The Ferris Wheel is a must, as you get to view all of Leeds City Centre and the surrounding area from high in the sky. Couples will love it as it’s really romantic.
Whilst visiting the Christkindelmarkt, I would also recommend you to go visit Thor's, a drinking hut which serves delicious-tasting beverages all at a reasonable price. Leeds German Christkindelmarkt is now open until 24th December, each day from 10:30 am - 9:30 pm throughout the week - except Sundays where it closes earlier at 7:30 pm.
