Scotland plays host to one of the quintessential celebrations of welcoming in the New Year – Hogmanay. With many New Year traditions originating in Scotland, the Scots really know how to do New Year properly!

This is our guide to celebrating New Year in our three Scottish cities – Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Edinburgh

Hogmanay in Edinburgh is widely considered to be one of the best celebrations of New Year in the world, with thousands of revellers descending on the city every year to sample the delights of this historic city.

Hogmanay in Edinburgh is stretched out over a number of days but New Year’s Eve is the big one. With the beautiful Edinburgh Castle providing the backdrop, a musical spectacular commences with several music stages attracting a number of big names. This year Simple Minds, The View and Bwani Junction top the bill.

Come mid-night, the customary fireworks light up the sky and everyone joins hands and sings Auld Lang Syne to give the evening a traditional conclusion.

Our Edinburgh hotel is only 10 minutes’ walk from the fun so why not book a room today!

Glasgow

Glasgow will be saying goodbye to 2012 in style with “Glasgow Loves Hogmanay” - a traditional Scottish celebration for all the family that brings in the best of Scottish entertainment and activities.

The historic George Square is the place to be for Hogmanay in Glasgow, with activities kicking off from 12 Midday. From storytelling for the kids, to traditional Celidhs and Scottish music, it really is a fun-filled day for all the family.

Running until 10pm, Hogmanay in Glasgow certainly packs a lot in to the day, and is less than 15 minutes’ walk from our Glasgow hotel.

Aberdeen

Aberdeen is making sure the New Year is seen in with a bang this year, as they conclude their Hogmanay celebrations with a huge fireworks display from the rooftop of His Majesty’s Theatre in the very heart of the city.

With £50,000 being spent on this pyrotechnical extravaganza, it is certainly going to be a Hogmanay to remember this year in Aberdeen!

The festive finale is part of Aberdeen’s Winter Festival which offers something for everyone from international street markets, to country fairs and concerts.

If Aberdeen’s Hogmanay celebrations sound good to you, why not book in at our hotel in Aberdeen, only 10 minutes’ walk from all the action!
