It costs 20 Euros to enter this run, and paying this fee will not only allow participants to run, but also give them a free finishers pack, Aqua Pura water, Powerade, chip timing, finishers medals, and t-shirts. The Winter Run begins at noon.
The Great Winter Run has been an annual event since 2005. There are numerous events to get involved in. Men may participate in either a four kilometer or 8.9 kilometer run, whereas women run six kilometers. Since the advent of this event, the best time for the four kilometer race for men was 12:16, achieved by Nick McCormick in 2006. The 8.9 kilometer run's best time was 26.08, achieved by Keneisa Bekele in 2006 as well. The six kilometer race for women also saw its best time in 2006 when Gelete Burka finished at 19:01.
Young men and women are also encouraged to participate in this event. There are categories for men under the age of 13, women under the age of 13, men under the age of 15, women under the age of 15, men under the age of 17, and women under the age of 17. A 1.5 kilometer course for children between the ages of three and eight is also available. The Bupa Great Winter Run is five kilometers long and is designed for runners over the age of 14.
Many runners that participate in this event raise money for charity organizations. The featured charity for the 2011 Great Winter Run is Leukemia and Lymphoma Research. To support this cause, join the running team Banana Army, which is the official running team of the charity.
