The Dublin Marathon 2016 is the latest instalment in a series of annual marathons held in Dublin, Ireland. In 2016, the event will be held on Sunday, October 30th, at 9 AM. As with every past Dublin Marathon, this year's event will begin at Fitzwilliam Square in the centre of Dublin and finish at Merrion Square. The route of the race usually proceeds counterclockwise around the city and passes through Phoenix Park.

Dublin Marathon History

The Dublin Marathon was first held in 1980 after its invention by Noel Carroll. The Dublin Marathon's competition pool grows in size nearly every year. The 1980 Dublin Marathon featured 2,100 competitors and 1,420 finishers, while the 2000 Dublin Marathon included 8,900 and over 14,000 took part in the 2014 Dublin Marathon. Many Dublin Marathon contenders travel from abroad to participate but in 2013 both the men's and women's marathons were both won by Irish citizens for the first time in twenty years!

Dublin Marathon Records

The Dublin Marathon is open to levels of runners and have had some excellent records set by male and female runners over the years. The men's winner in 1980 was Dick Hooper, clocking in at 2:16:14. The female winner was Carey May, finishing in 2:42:11. The fastest completion of the Dublin Marathon so far took place in 2011 when Geoffrey Ndungu from Kenya finished the event in 2:08:33.
