Situated next to Exeter Central train station, The Angel takes pride in being a ‘real bar for real people’. The pub has some quirkier features that make it stand out; a smoking deck area with a big screen projector showing vintage sports videos, live music on selected nights (usually Thursday to Saturdays) and a resident mascot in the form of Bob the dog. It’s the perfect place for a quiet drink during the day or a bustling evening out in Exeter.

Thatched roof, slate floors, real West-country ales, homemade food, crackling log fires… The Huntsman Inn is a quintessentially English pub. Located in the middle of country village Ide (only a couple of miles from Exeter), the Huntsman Inn has a warm friendly atmosphere that makes any hungry or thirsty visitor feel welcome.
The menu offers a contemporary, international twist on traditional British pub selections such as roasted chicken supreme with butter bean and chorizo cassoulet (£14) and roasted Devon pork belly with spicy broth, fondant sweet potato and stir fried vegetables (£12). Although the pub has won numerous awards for its food, it’s very reasonably priced with a 2 course Sunday Roast costing just under £15.
With a lovely country garden and a dedicated, friendly team, The Huntsman Inn is a true Devon gem and is only a 10 minute drive from Exeter City Centre.

brief walk from either Exeter Central or Exeter St. Thomas train stations, The Fat Pig is wonderfully wacky establishment dedicated to providing top quality food, drink and a blazing fireplace to warm yourself by. To say they’re dedicated to meat is an understatement. All of their beef, pork and lamb is sourced directly from local farms, they hunt their own venison and rabbit, as well as making their own sausages, black puddings, pâtés and much more – again, all at very reasonable prices.
The Fat Pig drinks menu is just as extensive and exceptional as their food. In the pub’s cellar is an ‘experimental brewery’ where the staff concoct their own recipe beers. Whiskey lovers can rejoice in their 100+ selection of single malts as well as the numerous Irish whiskey, bourbon and blend choices.
One for keen foodies and drinkers, The Fat Pig certainly lives up to its name!
Those looking for a pub with an interesting history, cosy open fire- proudly claimed to be ‘maybe the best you will ever see’, and a welcoming atmosphere, look no further than The Old Malt Scoop. A half an hour drive from Exeter, the family run pub is around 400 years old and used to be an undertakers! Apparently famous for their ghosts (we can see why they are there…!), The Old Malt Scoop also offers real national and local ales and a classic pub menu prepared by owner Adrian, who has a background as a chef and baker.
Additionally, The Crediton Village Revel takes place every year in early July on the village green opposite, where the pub holds their own beer festival. Don’t miss out if you’re in or around Devon near the time!
Originally a 16th Century Devonshire Coaching house, The Traveller’s Rest is as historical as it is charming. Like the other pubs mentioned on this list, it boasts real ales (including guest, locally produced and old favourites), fine wines, lovingly-prepared homemade food and a good fireplace. Any traveller in search of a hospitable and comfortable environment need look no further as owner Tim (with dog ‘Guinness’) ensures all patrons feel warm and welcome.
