Try the triangle
‘The Baltic Triangle’ is home to artists, photographers, fashion designers, tech developers, architects and musicians. It’s both a place for work and a vibrant place to relax or hang out. Found across the road from The Albert Dock, it’s tucked away from the usual tourist routes and the bustle of Liverpool One just down the road.
A personal favourite of ours in the area is The Baltic Bakehouse. It’s a multi-award winning bakery, having recently been voted one of the best bakeries in the whole of the UK. Good though their pastries and loafs are, we tend to fill our boots with their amazing breakfast menu. Our family picks include the HLT (featuring halloumi instead of bacon) and the mushrooms on toast, while the kids cook their own sourdough bread in the toaster at the table. A perfect mix of open kitchen, open brick, vintage furniture and simply brilliant food.
Hunt for your vintage treasure
You never know just what you might find at Hobo Kiosk. This exciting little vintage bazaar can be found within the Baltic Triangle. Rummage through vintage and mid-century furniture, homewares, unique upcycled pieces, salvaged industrial treasures, vinyls, comics and local art at this independent store. Keep an eye on their packed events calendar, as they’ve a knack for showing up at or throwing events around the city – who knows, you might just end up bringing something totally unexpected home with you!
Be wowed by both cathedrals
Liverpool Cathedral is steeped in amazing history and is the most dominating feature of the city’s impressive skyline. Once you’ve finished admiring the architecture from terra firma (it is the longest cathedral in the world after all), use this landmark to get a whole different view of the city. Two lifts and 100+ steps will take you to the top of its tower; with incredible views across Liverpool, The Wirral and beyond. If you’re around late on a Thursday, it’s open past sunset for an extra special experience. Don’t leave without a stroll into neighbouring St James’ Gardens though, where a path winds its way through hundreds of old gravestones and small tombs. It’s eerily magical.
From Liverpool Cathedral, Hope Street connects you to the other wonder on the skyline; Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Hear the huge bells of the cathedral bong away as you grab a quick drink in the adjoining coffee shop, before exploring the jaw-dropping interior. It’s a truly iconic cathedral and sits atop one of the biggest crypts in the UK. After your visit at the cathedral you may consider some shopping in Liverpool after already having so many things to do in Liverpool before taking a short walk to the Liverpool ONE shopping centre.
Liverpool’s a city known for its creativity, so it’s no surprise that there’s plenty of art to be found on its streets. A favourite of ours is “The Suitcases”, an installation on Hope Street. Labelled stone suitcases are stacked atop of each other and “belong” to many of Liverpool’s famous names such as John Lennon, Charles Dickens and E. Chambre Hardman.
