When thinking about where to spend your Christmas, initial instincts may not turn to the seaside. I assure you though, Brighton has one of the greatest holiday spirits of anywhere in the entire country.

Just a stone’s throw from the sea shore is Jubilee Square, which at this time of year becomes the home of Brighton’s own quaint little Christmas market. Handcrafted goods, chocolate wines and a multitude of other obscure knick-knack stalls can be found here, so there’s sure to be something to suit everyone’s tastes.

If Christmas markets aren’t really for you though, the surrounding amenities in Jubilee Square don't slack. Not only are you mere seconds from the main lanes, but the area is also host to a number of high-end restaurants, bars and the spectacular library building, which looks even more impressive under the fluorescent night lighting.

Brighton’s most lovable and prestigious coffee group, Small Batch, are based just outside the square. Their rustic aesthetic, friendly staff, and high-quality coffee offer a much-needed and enticing warming break from the harsh weather. At this time of year, they unveil their festive range - which I can’t recommend enough! Once you’ve tried their rum hot chocolate, you’ll be completely hooked.

December is one of the best times to find yourself in Brighton and several wacky and Christmas traditions are scheduled throughout the month. Almost every night as the sun sets, heading down to the seafront, you will see the breathtaking display from the starlings as thousands upon thousands of birds fill the sky. They create mesmerising patterns in what is surely one of the most beautiful spectacles on the planet.

Similarly, if you're lucky enough to catch the city's Santa Run, you're sure to be in for a laugh. And if you are nearby on Christmas Day and fancy something really extravagant, be sure to get involved the age-old Christmas swim. Started back in 1860, the morning sees thousands gathered around the waters and sprinting into its icy waves. You don’t even have to join in, just watching it is a great way to start your special day!
